There are several means in which to heat your pool and extend your
swimming season.
One very popular means is the use of pool blankets and solar heating
units installed on top of your roof, which provides you with the space
required for the solar collectors as well as an energy efficient and
economical means of warming your pool water. Through the use of solar
heaters, you can enjoy your pool early in the morning and in the calm of
the evening. In addition, depending on where you live, you may even be
able to enjoy a swim in the crisp autumn.
The main components to most solar heating systems are the solar blanket,
the solar collector that is installed on the roof, and many homeowners
also purchase a gas or electric water heater to be used as an auxiliary
system especially in areas where the climate is mostly cloudy. In
addition, you will also require a swimming pool pump to circulate water
from your pool to the solar collector on your roof and then back to your
pool again, as well as a computer controller so that you can program
your system for day and night use as well as any changes such as
vacations.
Roof mounted solar heaters heat your pool water by pumping the water
through a network of usually black plastic pipes, which is heated by the
sun. The network of piping circulates the sun-heated water back to the
pool, thus heating the pool water.
By using a solar pool blanket, you prevent any heat loss from the water
caused by wind currents blowing over the pool surface. In addition, the
sun also heats up the pool blanket, thus heating the pool water
underneath. When you use the right solar heating system, you in many
cases you can increase your pool use by double and in some areas even
triple your usage.
A solar heating system has many wonderful benefits, its energy
efficient, economical to use, and is low-maintenance as well as long
lasting. In fact, some solar heating systems have been known to last as
long as 20 years. Though the initial cost is more expensive than other
gas or electric heating systems, the money you save on energy cost will
more than offset your initial cost.
